Indianapolis Brewing Co's Bock Beer Sign

Object/Artifact

Bock Beer. Indianapolis Brewing Company. Indianapolis, IN.

Indianapolis Brewing Company was established in 1887, as a result of merging F. Schmidt Brewing Company, Casper Maus Brewery, and P. Lieber Brewing Company City Brewery. The company remained in production until 1948, when its president was found guilty of underfilling beer bottles, which caused the company to go into bankruptcy. The brewery survived Prohibition by producing tonics and malt extract. However, when Prohibition ended, they returned to brewing beer. Indianapolis Brewing Company began producing Bock Beer in 1933 and continued to brew it until the company’s closing. During this period, it produced four different variations of Bock Beer: Indiana Club Bock Beer, Deluxe Bock Beer, Gold Medal Bock Beer, and Burgomaster Bock Beer. This paper sign is from the 1930s and was likely one of the first advertisements for Indianapolis Brewing Company's new product.
