Bock Beer. Narragansett Brewing. Cranston, R.I.
This advertisement for Narragansett Brewing Company’s Bock Beer was created by the famous author and illustrator Robert Lawson. Lawson was well known for his animal illustrations and won multiple awards for his work, including a Caldecott Medal and a Newbery Medal; he is most known for his contributions to Mr. Popper’s Penguins, The Story of Ferdinand, and Rabbit Hill. In 1935, the Narragansett Brewing Company commissioned Lawson to create this advertisement for their Bock Beer. It features a goat, which is the primary symbol for Bock Beer, as well as many other woodland creatures. Narragansett Brewing Company was founded in 1890 in Cranston, Rhode Island. Within 10 years of opening, Narragansett grew to be the largest brewery in New England and continued to grow. On February 8th, 1912, Narragansett produced its first batch of Bock Beer; it quickly gained popularity and inspired an annual Bock Beer Festival on the brewery’s grounds. Prohibition, Narragansett Brewing Company produced soft drinks, ice, and malt extract, which was used for medicinal purposes. In April of 1933, following the Cullen-Harrison Act, Narragansett Brewing Company restarted beer production and continued to grow the company throughout the first half of the 20th century. On July 15th, 1965, Narragansett Brewing Company was purchased by Falstaff Brewing Corporation, which continued to brew Narragansett beer. In 1982, due to extreme damage to the Cranston facility, Falstaff ceased production of the Rhode Island brewery.
