Pabst Extract Diversity Yard Long

Object/Artifact

Pabst Extract. Pabst Brewing Company. Milwaukee, WI.

This yard-long advertisement from Pabst Brewing Company for Pabst Extract was created in 1903 in anticipation of the 1904 World’s Fair set in St. Louis, Missouri. The overarching theme of the St. Louis World’s Fair was diversity; therefore, the inclusion of many countries and their cultures was a priority for the fair’s organizers. This piece features babies from a range of countries and cultures; two easily identifiable babies are Irish and Japanese, who are holding their respective countries' flags. This calendar is advertising Pabst Extract, which was sold as a medicinal product in drug stores. Pabst Extract claimed that it had a wide range of health benefits and was primarily marketed towards women who were not consuming Pabst products as much as men at the time due to societal restrictions. The Pabst Brewing Company, originally the Philip Best Brewing Company, was founded in 1844 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The company became Pabst Brewing Company in 1889 under the leadership of their President, Captain Frederick Pabst, who married the granddaughter, Maria Best, of Philip Best Brewing Company founder Jacob Best. The Pabst Brewing Company is still in production today and was ranked the fifth-largest U.S. brewery in 2025.
