The Eberhardt & Ober Brewing Company of Allegheny, PA was established in 1883 by brothers-in-law, William Eberhardt and John Ober. The company remained independent until 1899, when it joined Pittsburgh Brewing Company along with 20 other formerly independent breweries. The Pittsburgh Brewing Company continued to produce Eberhardt & Ober until it closed the plant in 1952, thus ceasing production of E & O products. The Eberhardt & Ober factory was built in 1883 on the north side of Pittsburgh in the Troy Hill neighborhood, as seen by the Mount Troy streetcar. This lithograph on paper was printed at the turn of the nineteenth century and features a factory scene with labelled plant buildings. Today, the majority of buildings have been demolished, other than the Bottling Department, which is now the Penn Brewery. This sign was likely produced to be displayed in saloons throughout Pittsburgh, where patrons could purchase E & O beer.
