Exelso "It Sells So Because It Excels So" Framed Cardboard Sign

Object/Artifact

Exelso. Hamm Exelso Company. St. Paul, MN.

Exelso was produced by the Hamm Exelso Company of St. Paul, MN, which was active between the years of 1920 and 1933. Exelso was first brewed prior to the start of Prohibition; however, when the 18th Amendment was passed, Theodore Hamm Brewing Company fully switched its production to non-alcoholic beverages, such as Exelso, and changed the company name to Hamm Exelso Company, in order to remain in production. Despite being non-alcoholic, Exelso contained hops and followed a similar production process to beers that Hamm’s was producing prior to Prohibition. This cardboard sign was produced in Massillon, OH, by the John Igelstroem Company and was displayed at soda fountains, cafes, and other establishments where one could purchase soft drinks.
