Object/Artifact

Grain Belt Beer. Minneapolis Brewing Company. Minneapolis, MN

Grain Belt Beer was produced by the Minneapolis Brewing Company, which was active from 1893 to 1967. The Minneapolis Brewing Company was formed when four breweries merged to combat pressure from foreign companies moving into the American market. These breweries were Germania Brewing Association, Heinrich Brewing Association, F. D. Norenberg, and John Orth Brewing Company. The first beer that was collectively produced following the merger was Grain Belt. The Minneapolis Brewing Company and Grain Belt Beer both experienced great success until the beginning of Prohibition. This Grain Belt sign was produced in the late nineteenth century and is a lithograph printed on cardboard by the Wilmanns Brothers Company of Milwaukee, WI. This print shows Grain Belt Beer being served with fine dinnerware to portray the message that Grain Belt is high-quality beer.
