Jacob Schmidt Brewing Co. Factory Scene

Object/Artifact

Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company. St. Paul, MN.

The Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company was founded in St. Paul, MN, in 1900 by Jacob Schmidt, his son-in-law, Adolph Bremer, and his brother Otto Bremer. The brewery was one of the largest in Minnesota, both by acreage and production; by 1936, Schmidt’s was the seventh largest brewery in the United States by production. This lithograph, printed on tin, was produced in the early 1900s and depicts an inaccurate factory scene. In this era, it was common for artists to create factory scenes without seeing the factory in person, commonly basing their work on other breweries that they had seen. Therefore, this depiction of the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company is not truly representative of the building in the 1900s. Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company was active until 1954, when the company was purchased by Pfeiffer Brewing Company of Detroit. After the purchase, Pfieffer continued to use the Schmidt Factory for beer production, and in later years, the factory was also used for production by Associated Brewing Company, G. Heileman Brewing Company, and Minnesota Brewing Company, with beer production ceasing in 2002. The Jacob Schmidt Factory building is still standing today as an apartment complex, and in 2018, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
