Schmidt's City Club "Big Game" Canvas
Object/Artifact
Schmidt's City Club. Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company. St. Paul, MN.
The Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company of St. Paul, MN, was founded in 1900 and remained active until 1954. The brewery was founded by Jacob Schmidt, Adolph Bremer, and Otto Bremer after buying and renovating the St. Paul Brewing Company’s factory. One of Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company’s most famous beers was City Club, which was first brewed prior to Prohibition; however, after the end of Prohibition, the beer saw a great increase in popularity. City Club became so popular that the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company decided to start offering it in cans, becoming one of the first breweries in Minnesota to have canned beer. City Club was even contracted by the United States government during World War II. This Pre-Prohibition oil on canvas painting, in its original frame, is titled Schmidt Brg. Co’s Big Game and depicts three men on a hunting trip, possibly the founders, enjoying Schmidt’s Beer. Many variations of this scene exist both on canvas and as a lithograph printed on tin; the paintings all differ from each other slightly due to their mass production by various artists.
